Sodium helps maintain body fluid balance. Excessive intake increases the risk of high blood pressure and stomach cancer.
-
For an average adult, one should not have more than 2000 mg of sodium (approx. 1 level teaspoon of salt) daily.
-
"Sodium" is a mandatory item to be listed in the nutrition label. Its value is usually expressed in milligram (mg) but sometimes it is shown in gram (g) whereas 1 g = 1000 mg.
