CFS issues further food alert

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (July 23) advised the public not to eat and the trade not to sell further canned food products of Castleberry's Food Company in the United States due to possible contamination with botulinum toxin.

The CFS noted that the food company had extended its earlier voluntary recall action to cover more products.

The affected products, now totaling over 80 items, include chili sauce, chili with beans, beef and other meat products under more than 20 brands. Details can be found on the website of the Centre for Food Safety: http://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/whatsnew/whatsnew_fa/whatsnew_fa.html

The food company has extended the recall to include all products listed irrespective of "best by" dates.

The authorities of the United States had issued warnings to consumers not to consume them.

"The CFS has contacted the US authorities for further information. We have alerted the trade and are closely monitoring the situation," a CFS spokesman said.
