Active tripartite collaboration enhances food safety
An active tripartite collaboration of the Government, the food trade and the public is essential in enhancing food safety.
Officiating at the opening ceremony of the Food Safety Day 2007 today (August 18), the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, said the Government was committed to upholding food safety through formulating and implementing effective control and regulatory measures.
He said that since its establishment in 2006, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) had spared no efforts in communicating with the food trade and the consumers to listen to their views and suggestions on food safety.
The food trade should adhere to good manufacture practices, comply with the requirements of relevant laws and regulations and source foods that were safe for consumption, he said.
As for members of the public, they should observe good personal and food hygiene and purchase foods from reliable retailers.
Co-organised by the CFS of the FEHD and Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 1, today's event is part of the publicity drive to promote food safety among the community.
In its fourth year and the second since the setting up of the CFS, the event featured a variety show, an exhibition and game booths.
Also officiating at the event included the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Eddy Chan; the Acting Controller, Centre for Food Safety, Dr Constance Chan; the Acting Assistant Director of Broadcasting (Radio), Mr Philip Chow; and the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Fred Li.
