Press Release

No delay in testing of eggs: CFS

In response to press enquiries about whether the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) had delayed sample testing of certain eggs, a spokesman for the centre said today (October 30):

"The CFS has actively tested various food items including poultry eggs since the occurrence of the melamine incident. It took egg samples from egg wholesaler '榮記蛋行' on October 28 for testing and the results were announced yesterday (October 29). '榮記蛋行' has never contacted the CFS asking it to test its eggs.

"Following recommendation by the Expert Group on Melamine Incident to expand the scope of testing to cover food materials, meat and vegetables, the CFS has begun taking egg samples at import, wholesale and retail levels in the second phase of sample testing (late October to early November). As far as the CFS is concerned, there has been no delay in testing of egg samples or announcing the test results.

"As of today, the CFS has tested 108 egg samples, among which 69 are from the Mainland. A total of 105 have been found satisfactory. We will continue our sample testing to safeguard food safety. The trade also has a role to play in ensuring the food they are selling is safe and fit for consumption."
