Parents urged not to feed three kinds of baby food to infants and young children

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (September 10) urged parents not to feed three kinds of organic rice milk snacks of the same brand in different flavours to infants and young children who are not ready for solid foods as the products concerned may not be able to soften in time in a child's mouth and cause choking. The trade should also stop selling the affected products concerned.

Product name: Plum Organics Little Cremes
Flavours:
1) Super Greens (kale, apple & sweet potato)
2) Super Purples (acai, blackberry & purple carrot)
3) Super Reds (pomegranate, beet & berry)
Net weight: 28 grams per pack
Best before: August 5, 2014 to August 12, 2015

A CFS spokesman said, "The CFS, through its routine Food Incident Surveillance System, learned that the US Food and Drug Administration has issued a notification concerning a recall of the above products initiated by the Plum Organics after it received complaints from consumers, including reports of injuries caused by choking, after consuming the abovementioned products. The affected products are in bite-sized snack pieces which are claimed to be able to soften in mouth in a short while and fit for infants' and young children's consumption. However, the products of the affected batches failed to soften in time in a child's mouth and created a potential choking hazard and thus need to be recalled."

The CFS will alert the trade about the incident and appeal to them to stop selling the products of the affected batches. Consumers who have bought the products of the affected batches should not feed them to their infants or young children who are not ready for solid foods.

The CFS will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate actions.
