Reason For Issuing Alert
  • The CFS was following up on an earlier relevant incident, the above-mentioned product sample was collected from a supermarket in Sham Shui Po for testing. The test result showed that the sample contained sulphur dioxide. Although the sulphur dioxide level is below the maximum permitted level under the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap 132 BD), the functional class and name of the additive were not declared on the food label of the sample.
Action Taken by the Centre for Food Safety
  • The CFS has informed the vendor concerned and the manufacturer which produced the shrimp noodles of the irregularities, and instructed the vendor concerned to stop sale and remove from shelves the affected product. The manufacturer concerned has initiated a recall according to the CFS' instructions.
  • The CFS will alert the trade, continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action. Investigation is ongoing.
Advice to the Trade
  • Stop using or selling the affected batch(es) of the product(s) without proper food label immediately.  
Advice to Consumers
  • Consumers who are allergic to sulphur dioxide should not consume the concerned product(s).   They should seek medical treatment if they feel unwell after consuming it/them.
